Why a Motivational Speaker?
If you asked me during mid 2002 how I was doing I would have told
you GREAT!
Life had been kind to me. I was born in the Northern Cape Province
of South Africa in the early sixties. I grew up on Bushveld and
Lowveld farms and matriculated in Somerset West, close to Cape
Town.
As a member of the Student Council I had lots of friends and spent my time
taking part in sports where I excelled. Owing to not knowing what I wanted to do professionally
after school I joined the Army for my conscription commitment,
but after 6 months transferred and joined the SA Navy as a Combat Officer.
I had so much fun I stayed for 17 years! During this period I was appointed
at 23, as the youngest Captain of a SA Naval Warship, qualified as a combat
diver and was awarded the Admiral Packer Trophy for Leadership
When I decided to resign from the Navy in 1996 to launch a Sports Marketing
company my colleaugues were surprised as I was heading for the top. My passion
was sport and I felt that this was were my future was.
I decided to specialise in Adventure Sports and launched Adventure Racing in
Southern Africa. I was a Founding Member of the Adventure Racing World Series and
I was heading for the top again. My daily life included travelling to remote and exotic
destinations and producing adventurous events and TV productions.
On 15 December 2002 all of this changed when I was involved in an Adventure
related motor vehicle accident. My entire life changed overnight and within 6 months
I had gone from being ultra succesfull to being complete broke.
It took 2 years to hit "rock bottom" and another 4 to get my life back.
To recover I had to persevere and re-build my life one day at a time, fighting
depression, an inability to focus on goals and radical mood swings along with the
other symptoms of Traumatic Brain Injury. I had to re-invent myself; teaching myself
how to rebuild my confidence and belief structures.
Today I am the CEO of Ukasa Business Solutions with companies
ranging from Multi-National enterprises to International Film
productions as clients.
I did not choose my experience, but by chosing to share them though a motivational
keynote speech I have chosen to turn it into a positive inspirational experience.
